At that point, drain lining versus excavation repairs is not simply a choice between the newest method and the traditional one. It is about choosing the repair that will properly suit the condition, position and layout of your drain.

For homeowners and landlords, the concern is usually practical. Will the driveway need lifted? Can the garden be kept intact? How long will the work take, and is the repair likely to last? A proper CCTV drain survey gives clear answers before any repair work is recommended.

What drain lining actually does

Drain lining is a no-dig repair method used to create a new pipe within the existing damaged pipe. After the drain has been cleared and thoroughly cleaned, a resin-impregnated liner is inserted through an access point and positioned over the defective area. It is then cured in place, forming a tough, watertight new inner wall.

Think of it as fitting a structural sleeve inside the drain rather than replacing the entire run. The repaired section is smooth, which helps waste flow and can reduce the chance of debris catching on rough joints or cracks. It also seals many entry points where fine tree roots have found their way into the pipe.

For a suitable pipe, lining can often be completed without opening up a lawn, patio, path or driveway. That is why it is often the preferred option where the damaged section runs beneath finished surfaces, close to a building, or through an area where digging would create considerable reinstatement work.

Lining is not a shortcut, though. The drain must first be properly diagnosed, cleared and prepared. Heavy scale, loose material, serious deformation or an obstruction that cannot be removed may prevent the liner from bonding or sitting correctly. The CCTV camera footage matters because it shows whether lining is a sound long-term repair, not just an attractive-looking option.

When no-dig lining is the sensible repair

Drain lining is particularly effective for localised cracks, leaking joints, minor fractures and root ingress where the original pipe still has enough shape and strength to support the liner. It can also work well where repeated blockages are caused by small defects that snag paper, wipes, fat or other debris.

The main benefit is reduced disruption. Instead of excavating a trench, the repair can usually be carried out from existing inspection chambers or access points. This can save time and avoid the added cost of replacing paving, tarmac, turf or landscaping afterwards.

It is also useful where access is awkward. A damaged pipe running under a conservatory, extension, driveway or shared access may be far more practical to line than to expose. In these situations, the price of digging is not just the excavation itself. It can include reinstatement, access arrangements and the inconvenience of having part of the property out of use.

There are limits. Lining slightly reduces the internal diameter of the pipe, although this is rarely an issue in a correctly sized domestic drain. More significantly, it cannot put a badly collapsed pipe back into shape. If the camera shows a large void, a severe dip holding water, extensive broken sections or pipework that has shifted out of line, a liner may not solve the underlying problem.

A patch liner or a full-length liner?

Not every defect requires the full drain run to be lined. If CCTV shows one clear fault, a local patch liner can seal that specific section while leaving sound pipework untouched. This is often a sensible, cost-conscious option for a single cracked joint or small root-damaged area.

A longer liner may be recommended where defects appear along much of the run, several joints are leaking, or the pipe has widespread surface deterioration. The right choice should come from what the survey shows, rather than from a fixed preference for one type of repair.

When excavation is the better answer

Excavation means exposing the damaged section of pipe, removing it and replacing it with new pipework. It is more disruptive than lining, but it remains the correct and necessary repair in many cases.

If a drain has collapsed, is badly crushed, has major movement, or has lost its fall, it needs to be physically corrected. The fall is the gradual slope that allows wastewater to travel away properly. A pipe that has sunk or been laid incorrectly can hold standing water and solids. A liner can seal the pipe, but it cannot reliably correct a significant structural dip.

Digging may also be needed where the drain route has to be altered, a branch connection needs rebuilt, or the existing pipe is too damaged to clean and prepare. Older clay drains can sometimes have missing sections, wide-open joints or extensive root growth that has distorted the line. In those cases, replacing the affected section gives a clear, solid repair rather than trying to work around a failing pipe.

Excavation can be the more economical option when the fault is shallow and easy to reach, such as beneath a small section of soft ground. It is a common mistake to assume no-dig repair is always cheaper. If access is straightforward and only a short length needs replaced, excavation may offer better value and a more direct fix.

What disruption should you expect?

A good excavation repair is planned to keep disruption to the smallest area possible. The precise section is identified on CCTV first, so there is no reason to dig blindly along the full line. The affected ground is opened, defective pipework is removed, new pipe is installed and tested, then the area is backfilled and made safe.

Reinstatement requirements vary. Replacing a section below grass is very different from opening up block paving, concrete or tarmac. This is one reason an upfront explanation matters. Before work starts, you should understand where the excavation will be, what is included in the repair and what the finished surface is likely to look like.

  • Can the work be completed from existing access points, or does the pipe need physically exposing?

For a cracked but stable pipe beneath a driveway, lining may avoid major disruption and provide a durable repair. For a collapsed section in a garden, excavation is usually the honest answer. For a single leaking joint, a patch liner may be enough. There is no one-size-fits-all method, which is why a camera survey should come before a repair quotation.

Do not keep paying to clear the same blockage

Repeated drain blockages often point to a structural cause. Jetting can remove roots, scale and debris, restoring flow quickly, but it cannot mend a displaced joint or rebuild a collapsed pipe.
